Richmond
is a historic city located in east-central Kentucky. As of the 2010 census, the population was 31,364. It's home to Eastern Kentucky University and is the state's seventh-largest city. Richmond is full of attractions, including the downtown historic district, which includes many beautiful Victorian structures. A self-guided walking tour of Richmond features over 70 historical buildings, homes and churches. A booklet to be used for the tour is available at the Richmond Visitor Center. The city of Richmond was also the site of an important battle during the American Civil War on August 30, 1862. That area has been preserved as Battlefield Park. The Rogers House, which serves as the Battle of Richmond Visitors Center, was surrounded by fighting during the Battle of Richmond. Another home, belonging to the Armstrong Family, served as a hospital during and after the Battle of Richmond. The home and original slave quarters are located in Battlefield Park. Richmond is home to Lake Reba Recreational Complex, a 450-acre recreational park that includes an 18-hole golf course, hiking trails, a playground, dog park, ball fields, a 75-acre fishing and boating lake and more. A few of the other attractions in Richmond include the Richmond Area Arts Center, Kentucky River Museum and the Hummel Planetarium and Space Theater.

Central Kentucky has a humid continental climate with warm summers and cold winters. Summers tend to be humid with frequent thunderstorms. Winters are generally cold, but with a few mild periods throughout the season. Spring begins in mid-March and is often wet, windy and unpredictable. Autumn is mild, sunny and very pleasant. Extreme weather is a possibility in Central Kentucky in the form of floods, ice storms and blizzards, but these types of storms are not common. The region is considered part of the Mississippi Plateau and the weather is influenced by the Gulf of Mexico. There are four distinct seasons, although winters are not as frigid as other parts of the country. This region gets an average of 43 inches of rain per year. Snowfall is typically five inches per year.
