Herrington-Lake
is a 2,335-acre man-made lake located in Mercer, Garrard and Boyle counties in central Kentucky. The lake was created in 1925 by the damming of the Dix River, which is a tributary of the Kentucky River. Dix Dam, at the time, was the largest earth-filled dam in the world and considered to be a major engineering feat. Herrington Lake is the deepest lake in Kentucky, with a maximum depth of 249 feet. It's known for its' excellent fishing opportunities for bluegill, catfish, crappie, hybrid striped bass, largemouth bass, spotted bass and white bass. The lake is 35 miles long and great for water-skiing, wake boarding, jet-skiing, tubing, fishing, and boating. After a day on the water, relax at a lakeside restaurant. Lodging at Herrington Lake includes cabins and even float houses on the water. Other lake services include dry storage facility, covered slips, pontoon, tube and kayak rentals. There's also a general store located at Herrington Lake. It sells everything from fishing supplies, live and artificial bait, boat supplies, snacks, ice, batteries, suntan lotion and souvenirs.

Central Kentucky has a humid continental climate with warm summers and cold winters. Summers tend to be humid with frequent thunderstorms. Winters are generally cold, but with a few mild periods throughout the season. Spring begins in mid-March and is often wet, windy and unpredictable. Autumn is mild, sunny and very pleasant. Extreme weather is a possibility in Central Kentucky in the form of floods, ice storms and blizzards, but these types of storms are not common. The region is considered part of the Mississippi Plateau and the weather is influenced by the Gulf of Mexico. There are four distinct seasons, although winters are not as frigid as other parts of the country.
