Danville
is a town in Boyle County, located in central Kentucky. As of the 2010 census, the population was 16,218 residents. In 2001, the city of Danville received a Great American Main Street Award from the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and in 2011, Money Magazine placed Danville as the fourth best place to retire in the United States. Danville is called "the City of Firsts" for the following reasons: it housed the first ever courthouse in Kentucky, the first U.S. Post Office west of the Allegheny Mountains, the first state-supported school for the deaf, home to Dr. Ephraim McDowell, the first physician in the world to successfully remove an ovarian tumor and home to the oldest college administration building and campus west of the Allegheny Mountains. The town is also home to several institutions of higher learning including Transylvania University, founded in 1783, but it was moved to Lexington in 1789. Centre College was founded in 1819, the Danville Theological Seminary was founded in 1853, the Caldwell Institute for Young Ladies in 1860, which later merged with Centre College. Attractions in Danville include the Norton Center for the Arts and the Pioneer Playhouse, which is the oldest outdoor theater in Kentucky. The town also hosts several special events throughout the year. The Great American Brass Band Festival is a 3-day festival in June that features bands from across the country. Other events include the Kentucky State BBQ Festival in September, the Forkland Heritage Festival and the Perryville Civil War Battle Reenactment in October.

Central Kentucky has a humid continental climate with warm summers and cold winters. Summers tend to be humid with frequent thunderstorms. Winters are generally cold, but with a few mild periods throughout the season. Spring begins in mid-March and is often wet, windy and unpredictable. Autumn is mild, sunny and very pleasant. Extreme weather is a possibility in Central Kentucky in the form of floods, ice storms and blizzards, but these types of storms are not common. The region is considered part of the Mississippi Plateau and the weather is influenced by the Gulf of Mexico. There are four distinct seasons, although winters are not as frigid as other parts of the country.
