Berea
is an artisan community located in central Kentucky. It's also home to Berea College, a prestigious private, liberal arts college. As of the 2010 census, the population was 13,561. Berea is one of the fastest growing towns in Kentucky. The town of Berea has become a popular tourist community, due to its' high number of artists and craftspeople, and also for its' crafts festivals held throughout the year. Some of the arts you'll find in the town include handmade furniture, jewelry, weavers, potters, sculptors, musicians, glass artists and painters. As you stroll through the town, look for signs that say "Studio Artists at Berea: Artists at Work" for a chance to watch the artists at work. Historic Berea College was one of the first interracial and coeducational colleges in the southern U.S. Both the college and town are known for their commitment to conservation and sustainability. In the mid-1800s, there was no town in this part of Madison County - just a community of mostly farmers and people who were sympathetic to emancipation. When the community developed into a village, it was named Berea after the Biblical town where the people "received the Word with all readiness of mind." It was in the 1890s that an interest in the culture and traditions of Appalachia started to grow. Eventually, as it became apparent that there was a national market for these traditional crafts, the Berea Collage Fireside Industries was developed to market the crafts made by people in their homes. Soon, more artists settled in the town in hopes of being better able to market their crafts. The town of Berea, along with Asheville, North Carolina, became a center of the American Crafts Revival.

Central Kentucky has a humid continental climate with warm summers and cold winters. Summers tend to be humid with frequent thunderstorms. Winters are generally cold, but with a few mild periods throughout the season. Spring begins in mid-March and is often wet, windy and unpredictable. Autumn is mild, sunny and very pleasant. Extreme weather is a possibility in Central Kentucky in the form of floods, ice storms and blizzards, but these types of storms are not common. The region is considered part of the Mississippi Plateau and the weather is influenced by the Gulf of Mexico. There are four distinct seasons, although winters are not as frigid as other parts of the country. This region gets an average of 43 inches of rain per year. Snowfall is typically five inches per year.
