Georgetown
is located in Scott County in north-central Kentucky. As of 2011, the population was 29,690. The city is home to Georgetown College, a private liberal arts college. Georgetown is a historic city, settled in 1785 by Reverend Elijah Craig and his followers who came by way of what is now the state of Virginia. The city incorporated in 1790 and the area became part of the new State of Kentucky when it was created in 1792. Elijah Craig also founded a school called Rittenhouse Academy in Georgetown, which later became Georgetown College. The city is filled with beautiful Southern architecture, antique shops and museums. This region of Kentucky is well-known for its' history, horses and bourbon, and Georgetown is where Kentucky bourbon whiskey was first produced. Walking tours of downtown Georgetown are available and includes over 200 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. Other attractions include the Cardome Centre, Georgetown-Scott County Museum, the old Georgetown Cemetery, and St. Frances de Sales Mission. Beautiful parks and gardens abound in the area and scenic drives along the back roads take you past gorgeous horse farms, Irish fieldstone fences, tobacco and cattle farms. Elkhorn Creek is ideal for fishing and canoeing. Other recreational activities in the area include hiking, bike riding, horseback riding, golf and tennis.
