Dale-Hollow-Lake is a reservoir located on the Kentucky-Tennessee border. The lake was formed by the damming of the Obey River, about seven miles above its juncture with the Cumberland River. Dale Hollow Lake State Park is situated on the north side, or Kentucky side, of the lake. The larger portion of Dale Hollow Reservoir lies in northern Tennessee, and covers portions of Clay, Pickett, and Overton Counties. Small arms of the lake also extend northward into the Kentucky counties of Cumberland and Clinton. Dale Hollow Lake State Park covers 27,700 acres of water and 24,842 acres of surrounding land. It's a popular recreational lake, especially for sports like water skiing, fishing and boating. Dale Hollow Lake is well known for smallmouth bass fishing, currently holding the world record for the largest such fish ever taken (11 lb., 15 oz). The lake also contains crappie, muskellunge, walleye, catfish, gar, and trout. Geiger Island is an island in Dale Hollow Lake that's designated as a primitive camping site by the Army Corps of Engineers. There's also a 145-site campground in the surrounding forest, of which, 24 have been set aside for campers on horseback. The campground also offers a country store with everything from toiletries to souvenirs, camping cabins, showers, rest rooms, and a swimming pool. Other things to do at Dale Hollow Lake State Park include hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, caving, golf, birding and wildlife watching and miniature golf. There are over 15 miles of multi-use trails in the park that follow old logging roads along the ridge-tops that are open for hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking. Motorized vehicles are not allowed on the trails.

Dale Hollow Lake Weather & Climate

The Appalachian Mountains provide a scenic backdrop and have a significant impact on the weather of Tennessee. The climate is best described as mild with four seasons. Summers are generally warm and humid and winters are cold, but mild. Rain is common throughout the year, with thunderstorms in the spring and summer months. The humidity in summer often makes it seem warmer than it actually is in the region. Fall is crisp and cool and a good time to visit to view the brilliant foliage. Snow for the entire state is an average of 12 inches. Temperatures year round can be 10-20 degrees cooler on the mountaintops. Severe weather in Tennessee is rare since the state is east of the center of tornado activity, south of most winter blizzard conditions and too far inland for hurricanes.
