Jamestown
is a tourist town located in Russell County in south-central Kentucky. The population is approximately 1,600. The village of Jamestown was voted number one in Kentucky for "best small town for raising a family, 19th in the nation for its' family values, friendly people, low crime rate, strong work ethic and involved leadership." This area was first settled around 1826 and is known for being home to the spectacular Lake Cumberland and Lake Cumberland State Resort Park. The lake was constructed in 1952 primarily for flood control and hydroelectric power. However, it's since become a major source of tourism for south-central Kentucky and Jamestown. Lake Cumberland covers 65,530 acres with 1,255 miles of shoreline. It ranks as the 9th largest reservoir in the United States. It's especially known for its' fishing and boating opportunities. Other activities in the area include swimming, canoeing, horseback riding, hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, caving and camping. The whole area is filled with outdoor adventure, history and year-round special events and festivals. The Jamestown Lakefest Celebration and the Russell County Fair are just two of the many events hosted by the city every year. Other nearby attractions include Cave Run Lake, Laurel River Lake and Natural Bridge State Park. Steep forested slopes, cliffs, ravines, pristine rivers and streams characterize the land that is perfect for relaxing, scenic drives, wildlife viewing and photographic opportunities.
