Burkesville is a small town located in south-central Kentucky's Appalachian foothills region. It's part of Cumberland County, bordered by the Cumberland River to the south and east. The population of Burkesville is about 1,700. The town has a single stoplight, which is located at the point of intersection of Highways 90 and 61. An old-fashioned town square is on Main Street just a few hundred feet south of the stoplight. Main Street splits and forms a circle around the court house. Historic, original buildings of the town line the town square on three sides. The town of Burkesville was a vibrant river port city during the last part of the 19th century, when river travel was the only feasible way to move goods in and out of the area. In 1929, the first major roadway was opened in the area, connecting Burkesville to Glasgow, some 40 miles to the west. This led to the last steamboat docking in Burkesville that same year. Cumberland County is an area renowned for its' beautiful landscapes, charming small towns and friendly people. Naturalist and author, John Muir wrote of the town, Burkesville, in beautiful location, is embosomed in a glorious array of verdant flowering hills. The Cumberland must be a happy stream. I think I could enjoy traveling with it in the midst of such beauty all my life. Things to do here include swimming, fishing, hiking, scenic drives, golf, cave exploring, and antiquing.

Burkesville Weather & Climate

The Appalachian Mountains provide a scenic backdrop and have a significant impact on the weather of Tennessee. The climate is best described as mild with four seasons. Summers are generally warm and humid and winters are cold, but mild. Rain is common throughout the year, with thunderstorms in the spring and summer months. The humidity in summer often makes it seem warmer than it actually is in the region. Fall is crisp and cool and a good time to visit to view the brilliant foliage. Snow for the entire state is an average of 12 inches. Temperatures year round can be 10-20 degrees cooler on the mountaintops. Severe weather in Tennessee is rare since the state is east of the center of tornado activity, south of most winter blizzard conditions and too far inland for hurricanes.
