Monticello
is a town in Wayne County in south-central Kentucky. As of the 2010 census, the population was 6,188. Beautiful Lake Cumberland forms much of the northern border of Wayne County, and Tennessee is on the southern border. Monticello is the county seat and bills itself as "The Houseboat Capital of the World," due to the large number of houseboat manufacturers in the town. The other major industry in town is tourism, due to the proximity to Lake Cumberland. Things to do in the area include fishing, boating, water-skiing, swimming, tubing, canoeing, and camping. The Monticello/Wayne County Memorial Park offers 86 acres of walking trails, tennis courts, basketball courts, baseball and softball fields, miniature golf and picnicking. Other attractions include the Farmers' Market in Historic Downtown Monticello and the Wayne County Historical Museum. There's a free summer concert series in downtown Monticello the third Thursday of every month. Also, Civil War history buffs will not want to miss visiting nearby Mill Springs Park and the site of the Battle of Mill Springs. A museum is adjacent to the Mill Springs National Cemetery and consists of a community room, library, legacy room, exhibition hall, and a gift shop.
