Red-River-Gorge
is located in east-central Kentucky, within the Daniel Boone National Forest. The gorge has been designated a National Natural Landmark. The 20 square miles Clifty Wilderness Area lies entirely within Red River Gorge. The gorge is an intricate system of high sandstone cliffs, rock shelters, waterfalls, and natural bridges. There are more than 100 natural sandstone arches in the Red River Gorge Geological Area. This multitude of geological features has made the area a top rock climbing destination. The vast number of bolted routes in overhanging, pocketed sandstone draws climbers from all over the world, and is known as the Red among avid climbers. There are numerous traditional and sport climbing routes in the gorge, but sport climbing is most popular. Other activities, aside from rock climbing include hiking, fishing, boating, swimming, picnicking, horseback riding, biking, camping and birding. The Daniel Boone National Forest contains around 500 miles of trails through the rugged terrain; the largest network of trails in any national forest in Kentucky. One of the most well-known attractions at Red River Gorge is the Natural Bridge, a natural sandstone arch bridge that spans 78 feet across and is 65 feet high. There are several special events in the national forest throughout the year, including traditional Appalachian square dances each weekend in the summer.

Red River Gorge Weather & Climate

East-central Kentucky has a humid subtropical climate classification with ample precipitation. The precipitation is well distributed throughout the year, though fall is typically a bit drier than other seasons. Climatic conditions can vary significantly from year to year. Flash floods, usually resulting from intense but short-lived thunderstorms, are a particular concern in the rugged terrain of eastern Kentucky, which is characterized by steep slopes and narrow valleys. Flooding on major rivers is also a threat.
Drought occurs periodically in east-central Kentucky. When it does, it is often accompanied by oppressive heat. Overall, the climate is pleasant, although of a changeable nature day-to-day. You can expect snow and cold temps in the wintertime, but conditions are generally not severe. Spring is mild and unpredictable.
