Campton is a tiny town located in Wolfe County in east-central Kentucky. The population is approximately 500 residents. The village of Campton began as a camp town named for Jonathan Swift of the Swift's silver mine legend. Folklore says that Swift buried treasure in the area, and it's never been recovered. The town of Campton is host to the annual Swift Silver Mine Festival, held each Labor Day weekend in the downtown area. The town of Campton is also close to several major places of interest. Torrent Falls, near Natural Bridge State Park, features a beautiful waterfall and offers traditional and sport rock-climbing. Other nearby attractions include Swango Springs Mineral Water Resort and Red River Gorge. Campton is also not far from Natural Bridge State Park, which is located along the Middle Fork of the Red River in Powell and Wolfe Counties. The main feature of the park is the natural sandstone arch bridge that spans 78 feet and is 65 feet high. Aside from the natural arch bridge, other landmarks include Lovers Leap, Balanced Rock and Fat Man's Squeeze. The park is host to several special events throughout the year, and is famous for its' traditional Appalachian square dances each weekend in the summer.

Campton Weather & Climate

East-central Kentucky has a humid subtropical climate classification with ample precipitation. The precipitation is well distributed throughout the year, though fall is typically a bit drier than other seasons. Climatic conditions can vary significantly from year to year. Flash floods, usually resulting from intense but short-lived thunderstorms, are a particular concern in the rugged terrain of eastern Kentucky, which is characterized by steep slopes and narrow valleys. Flooding on major rivers is also a threat. Drought occurs periodically in east-central Kentucky. When it does, it is often accompanied by oppressive heat. Overall, the climate is pleasant, although of a changeable nature day-to-day. You can expect snow and cold temps in the wintertime, but conditions are generally not severe. Spring is mild and unpredictable.
