Cave-Run-Lake
is located just south of the city of Morehead in northeastern Kentucky. Cave Run Lake is an 8,270-acre reservoir built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1965. It's almost completely surrounded by the northernmost section of the Daniel Boone National Forest. Cave Run Lake is well-known for its' scenic beauty and fishing opportunities. The largest muskie ever caught in the state of Kentucky was caught in the lake, weighing 47 pounds. Other fish in the lake include bass, crappie, catfish, and trout. There are lots of other recreational activities available at Cave Run Lake, including swimming, boating, sailing, canoeing, kayaking, jet skiing, hiking, mountain biking and camping. Zilpo Road is a scenic byway accessible throughout the year the circles the lake, and is just one of the many scenic roads in the area. The towns and area surrounding Cave Run Lake offer a variety of shops, local arts and crafts, restaurants and other eateries. For lodging, you have your choice of motels, hotels, bed and breakfasts, cabins, a lodge and campgrounds. For those simply looking for a peaceful place to renew close to nature and wildlife, northeastern Kentucky can't be beat. To reach Cave Run Lake from Lexington, drive about 60 miles east on Kentucky 801 and take Exit 133.

Cave Run Lake Weather & Climate

Southwestern Kentucky has a four-season climate with warm, humid summers and cold, wet winters. The climate classification is humid subtropical. The greatest rainfall occurs in the winter and early spring, especially March. September and October are the driest months due to the higher frequency of slow-moving, high-pressure systems. Thunderstorms are common in spring and summer. Average annual precipitation is 49 inches and snowfall ranges from 4 to 10 inches. Due to the milder winters, snow cover rarely lasts for more than a few days, although it is occasionally hit by major snowstorms. This area is also prone to freezing rain and ice storms. Other severe storms, such as tornadoes are possible, but infrequent in southwestern Kentucky. When they do occur, however, it's usually west of the Cumberland Plateau.
