Morehead
is located in northeastern Kentucky along the historic Midland Trail (Interstate 64 and US Route 60.) As of the 2010 census, the population was 6,845 residents. The city is home to Morehead State University and is surrounded by the Daniel Boone National Forest. It's also a historic town, known for the notorious conflict in the 1880s, known as the Rowan County War. It all began with an election-day bar-room brawl, that ended with 20 people dead and around 100 wounded. Today, Morehead is known as being the home base for Cave Run Lake, a 8,270-acre recreational reservoir that brings a lot of tourist activity to the town. Cave Run Lake is well-known for its' fishing opportunities. The largest muskie ever caught in the state of Kentucky was caught in the lake, weighing 47 pounds. Other fish in the lake include bass, crappie, catfish, and trout. Other recreational activities available at Cave Run Lake include swimming, boating, sailing, canoeing, kayaking, jet skiing, hiking, mountain biking and camping. Morehead offers a large variety of lodging, such as motels, hotels, bed and breakfasts, cabins, and campgrounds. The town has all kinds of restaurants, from fast food to ethnic restaurants. Morehead is also home to several special events throughout the year, including an Appalachian Arts and Crafts Festival, Cave Run Storytelling Festival, the Morehead Fireworks Event and a Magical Christmas Tree Walk.

Southwestern Kentucky has a four-season climate with warm, humid summers and cold, wet winters. The climate classification is humid subtropical. The greatest rainfall occurs in the winter and early spring, especially March. September and October are the driest months due to the higher frequency of slow-moving, high-pressure systems. Thunderstorms are common in spring and summer. Average annual precipitation is 49 inches and snowfall ranges from 4 to 10 inches. Due to the milder winters, snow cover rarely lasts for more than a few days, although it is occasionally hit by major snowstorms. This area is also prone to freezing rain and ice storms. Other severe storms, such as tornadoes are possible, but infrequent in southwestern Kentucky. When they do occur, however, it's usually west of the Cumberland Plateau.
