Harlan
is the name of both a county and small town within the county in southeastern Kentucky. The population of the town is approximately 2,000, while the population of the entire county is about 29,000. The village of Harlan was first settled in 1796. It was first named Mount Pleasant when it was incorporated in 1876 for a nearby Indian burial mound. It was renamed Harlan in 1912 because there was already a Mount Pleasant in the state. Things to do in this mostly rural area of the state include hiking, horseback riding, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, camping, ATV off-road adventures and golf. There are several unique attractions in the area, including the Hensley Settlement, a historic settlement established in 1904 that sits atop Brush Mountain at the end of a seven-mile rugged wagon road. It includes a blacksmith's shop, one-room schoolhouse and homes. The Kentucky Coal Museum gives a glimpse of life of miners in the early part of the 19th century. It features a company store and museum artifacts, antiques, photographs, and machinery. For a look at the art and culture of the Appalachians, visit the Godbey Appalachian Center, which regularly hosts art exhibits and performing arts.
