Whitesburg
is located in Letcher County in southeast Kentucky. As of the 2010 census, the population was 2,140. Whitesburg is perhaps most well-known for being home to Appalshop, which is a multi-disciplinary arts and education center founded in 1969 that produces original films, theater, music, radio, photography, multimedia, and books. One of Whitesburg's best-known features is an arched stone bridge built in 1938, and its' historic downtown district, which also includes many buildings built between 1914 and 1925. For outdoor recreation, there's a paved rails-to-trails path open to pedestrians and bicycles. In addition, the Little Shepherd Trail offers 13 miles that passes through the Pine Mountain State Scenic Trail and the Pine Mountain Wildlife Corridor. Whitesburg hosts several special events throughout the year. The Country Music Highway Road Rally is an antique car rally that begins at Greenup, Kentucky, traverses the length of U.S. 23 in Kentucky, and ends at Whitesburg. The Cowan Creek Mountain Music School holds a week-long workshop of banjo, guitar, fiddle and square dancing lessons, storytelling and singing. Other events include the Seedtime on the Cumberland arts and crafts festival, 4th of July Celebration, the Riverside Days Festival, and the Mountain Heritage Festival held the last weekend of September.

North Central Virginia's Piedmont Region has a humid, subtropical climate with four, distinct seasons. Heavy snows are common in the wintertime in the Piedmont region, while the rest of the state may receive only a fraction of snow. Cold air masses arriving from the Blue Ridge Mountains, especially during the winter, can lead to significant snowfall and ice storms from early November to mid-March. Thunderstorms are possible in all months of the year, but more common in the warm, humid days of summer. Although the temperature of Virginia varies according to location, it generally becomes increasingly warmer farther to the south. During the month of September, anywhere from 10 to 40 percent of Virginias rainfall comes from hurricanes and tropical storms.
