Pikeville is located in east-central Kentucky, near the Virginia-West Virginia border. As of the 2010 census, the population was 6,903. Pikeville is the site of the legendary Hatfield-McCoy family feud that took place in the late 1800s. Guided tours are available of some of the homes of family members and sites where the feud played itself out. Pikeville sits in a beautifully scenic area of Kentucky, with towering mountains, lush forests and woodlands, lakes and streams. The town of Pikeville is built along the Big Sandy River, with the downtown area in a narrow valley in a bend of the Levisa Fork of the river. One of the major attractions of the town is Hillbilly Days Festival, an annual event usually held in mid-April. Since its' beginnings in 1976, Hillbilly Days has grown to be Kentucky's second largest festival in the state. It celebrates the Appalachian culture and includes a carnival, local arts and crafts, musicians and lots of good food. Fans of mountain music come from all across the U.S. to the festival, which benefit's the Shriners Hospital for Children. There's also a Hatfield and McCoys Heritage Days Festival held in September each year. Other attractions in Pikeville include the Eastern Kentucky Expo Center, a 7,000-seat venue that hosts big-name entertainers, such as Tim McGraw and Martina McBride. For outdoor recreation, the Hatfield-McCoy River Trail offers canoe, kayak, and tube rentals and guided tours on the Big Sandy River.
