Letcher is a rural, mountainous county in southeastern Kentucky. As of the 2010, the population was 24,519. The county seat is the town of Whitesburg. Two of the main attractions in Letcher County are Kingdom Come State Park and Bad Branch Falls State Nature Preserve. Kingdom Come State Park is over 1,200 acres of wilderness at an elevation of 2,700 feet at the crest of Pine Mountain. Some of the most extraordinary rock formations in the state are featured in Kingdom Come State Park, including Log Rock, a natural sandstone bridge. The park also includes four mountaintop overlooks, access to the 38-mile long Little Shepherd Trail and two large picnic areas. Primitive camping is available year-round and a 3.5 acre fishing pond provides pedal boats, miniature golf and a gift shop. Bad Branch Falls state park features a forested gorge with a 60-foot waterfall tumbling over sandstone cliffs on the south face of Pine Mountain. Over 2,600 acres protects the gorge and also one of the largest concentrations of rare and uncommon species in the state. This park has 7.4 miles of foot trails and bridges for hiking, birding, wildlife viewing and photography. The town of Whitesburg in Letcher County offers shopping and restaurants, and is home to the Cowan Creek Mountain Music School. Several festivals are held in the town each year, including Seedtime on the Cumberland arts and crafts festival, the Riverside Days Festival, and the Mountain Heritage Festival held the last weekend of September.

Letcher Weather & Climate

North Central Virginia's Piedmont Region has a humid, subtropical climate with four, distinct seasons. Heavy snows are common in the wintertime in the Piedmont region, while the rest of the state may receive only a fraction of snow. Cold air masses arriving from the Blue Ridge Mountains, especially during the winter, can lead to significant snowfall and ice storms from early November to mid-March. Thunderstorms are possible in all months of the year, but more common in the warm, humid days of summer. Although the temperature of Virginia varies according to location, it generally becomes increasingly warmer farther to the south. During the month of September, anywhere from 10 to 40 percent of Virginias rainfall comes from hurricanes and tropical storms.
