Pineville
is located in southeastern Kentucky; the county seat of Bell County. The population of Pineville is around 2,000 residents. The town sits on a small strip of land between Pine Mountain and the Cumberland River. The community of Pineville is one of the oldest settlements in the state of Kentucky. Originally settled in 1781 as Cumberland Ford, it was part of a tract of land owned by Isaac Shelby, Kentuckys first governor. Pineville incorporated in 1889, and it was then that the name was also changed. The town sits alongside the river and is subject to flooding, including a devastating incident on April 4, 1977, in which a floodwall built in 1952 was overwhelmed and 200 houses were destroyed or damaged. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers upgraded the floodwall in 1988. The economy of Pineville is centered around tourism and the coal mining industry. It's near Pine Mountain State Resort Park, which was Kentucky's first state park, opened in 1924. The park is known for its' annual Laurel Festival, which has been a tradition since 1931. Attractions in the park include Chained Rock, a "man-made" tourist attraction dating to the 1930s. Supposedly, a group of people hauled a 101-foot-long chain to the top of Pine Mountain and attached it to a massive boulder that loomed above the city. Supposedly the rock was chained to the mountain in order to keep it from rolling down the mountain and destroying the city. Other things to do in the park include swimming, hiking, miniature golf, picnicking, camping and there is a playground, interpretive center and gift shop on the grounds.

The Cumberland Gap Region of Kentucky is characterized by rugged terrain, a moderate climate, and abundant rainfall. The climate is humid subtropical. Four distinct seasons include vivid fall foliage and snow in the winter. Average high is 87 °F in July, which is the warmest month, with the average lows of 24 °F occurring in January, the coolest month. Average annual precipitation is 42.8 inches, with the wettest month being March, averaging 5.25 inches. An average of 9-10 inches of snow is received each year - enough to be pretty without being too much of a problem. Occasional heavy snowfall or ice storms occur. On average, there are 209 sunny days per year in southeastern Kentucky. Springs start out cool and turn mild, while autumn is sunny and dry.
