Cumberland-Gap is located just north of the spot where the states of Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia meet. It actually is a "gap," or pass, through the Cumberland Mountains. It's important in American history for being a major passageway through the lower central Appalachian Mountains for the migration westward. Part of the Wilderness Road, it's now part of the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park. There is also a small community named Cumberland Gap in Claiborne County, Tennessee, near the Cumberland Gap pass, the Cumberland Gap Tunnel and the national park. The population of the town is 494. The actual gap is a low point in the Cumberland Mountains that has long been an important passageway. Used by Native Americans for centuries, it was discovered by settlers in 1750 and widened by a team of loggers led by Daniel Boone. This made it more accessible to pioneers heading into western Kentucky and Tennessee. It's noted for being one of the most important pieces of land in American history and it's estimated that some 300,000 people traveled it, either by foot or horseback, between 1760 and 1850. Today, it's popular with tourists for its' scenic vistas, cascading waterfalls, unique rock formations, lush forests and extensive hiking trails. Other things to do in Cumberland Gap National Park include exploring underground caves, mountain biking, fishing, wildlife viewing, birding, photography and camping. The park is also home to many historic buildings and structures of the early pioneers and the Civil War.
