Somerset
is a historic town located in Pulaski County in south-central Kentucky. As of the 2010 census, the population was 11,196. The town of Somerset was first settled in 1798 and became the county seat in 1802. An important battle in the American Civil War, the Battle of Mill Springs, was fought about eight miles west of Somerset, and a museum is now located at the site. Civil War reenactments are often held at the site, as well, and draws many visitors. Another smaller Civil War battle was fought at nearby Dutton's Hill. Tourism is important to Somerset's economy, due to its proximity to Lake Cumberland, Cumberland Falls, Natural Bridge State Park and the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. Somerset is also host to the annual Master Musician's Festival and the Somernites Cruise, a large monthly car show. Lake Cumberland is one of the main attractions in the area, which helps draw more than one million visitors to the town each year, mostly between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Lake Cumberland is one of the largest man-made lakes in the world and well-known for its excellent fishing opportunities, as well as many other recreational sports. The town of Somerset offers lots of shopping, restaurants and hotels, most located along U.S. Route 27. This area makes up the longest stretch of tourist-related businesses in the state of Kentucky.
