Murray
is a city in Calloway County in the southwest corner of Kentucky. As of the 2010 census, the population was 17,741. It's home to Murray State University. The city of Murray is host to several special events and festivals throughout the year. The annual Freedom Fest is usually held at the end of June and includes a parade, a large farmer's market, a street fair, concert and fireworks. One of the most enjoyed events during the festival is the Squealin' on the Square, a Kansas City Barbeque Society competition, which attracts people from all over the south and Midwest. Dickens Alley is another annual event when historic downtown Murray is turned into a scene from Old London just for the December holidays. The festival features a street fair, home-baked goods and carolers dressed from the Victorian period. Other festivals include the West Kentucky Highland Games and Festival, the Lumberjack Challenge, the RC Aircraft Fly-in and Bands of America, a regional competition held at Murray State University. Murray has all kinds of shopping and dining, whether you're in the mood for down home Southern cooking or fine dining. For outdoor fun, Murray is near Kentucky Lake and Land Between the Lakes. The fishing is excellent for crappie, large and smallmouth bass, bluegill, white bass, stripers and sauger. Other activities include boating, sailing, hiking, swimming, camping, horseback riding, golf, go-karts and mountain biking. The city of Murray is also home to two large parks. The city was recently named "Playful City USA" for the second year in a row - the only city in Kentucky to be awarded this honor.

Northwest Tennessee has a moderate four-season climate with warm, humid summers and mild wet winters. The greatest rainfall occurs in the winter and early spring, especially March. September and October are the driest months due to the higher frequency of slow-moving, high-pressure systems. Thunderstorms are common in spring and summer. Average annual snowfall ranges from 4 to 6 inches in the south and west to over 10 inches in the east. Due to the mild winter conditions over most of the state, snow cover rarely lasts for more than a few days. Severe storms, such as tornadoes, are infrequent in Tennessee, and when they do occur, it is usually west of the Cumberland Plateau.
