Gilbertsville
is a small community located in Marshall County in southwestern Kentucky. It's the closest community to the Kentucky Dam and the Kentucky Dam Village State Resort Park. The original town of Gilbertsville was founded in 1871 near the Tennessee River and incorporated in 1874. The village included a bank, jail, school and several stores, with a population of about 300 people. When the construction of the dam began in 1938, Gilbertsville was one of the towns that had to be relocated. It was moved to its present site and initially renamed West Gilbertsville and incorporated in 1953. The town later abandoned its corporate status. For many decades, Gilbertsville has been the site of a 25-acre Kentucky Sheriffs Boys and Girls Ranch, which provides a free week-long summer camp for children ages 8 to 11. The town basically survives on the tourism created by the dam and lake and state park. It is home to an 18-hole golf course, a large marina, car race track and an airport. The nearby Kentucky Dam Village State Resort Park is on the northern shore of Kentucky Lake and encompasses 1,351 acres. It offers excellent accommodations and has become one of the state's most popular resorts. This area is well known for its' excellent fishing and boating, and other activities like swimming, hiking, camping, and picnicking. The nearby town of Benton is home to special events, such as Tater Day and Big Singing Day, which is the oldest indigenous musical tradition in the United States.

Southwestern Kentucky has a four-season climate with warm, humid summers and cold, wet winters. The climate classification is humid subtropical. The greatest rainfall occurs in the winter and early spring, especially March. September and October are the driest months due to the higher frequency of slow-moving, high-pressure systems. Thunderstorms are common in spring and summer. Average annual precipitation is 49 inches and snowfall ranges from 4 to 10 inches. Snow cover rarely lasts for more than a few days, although it is occasionally hit by major snowstorms. This area is also prone to freezing rain and ice storms. Other severe storms, such as tornadoes are possible, but infrequent in southwestern Kentucky. When they do occur, however, it's usually west of the Cumberland Plateau.
