Pleasant-Hill
is the site of a historic Shaker religious community, nestled in the rolling hills of Kentucky's Bluegrass Region. It's about thirty miles southwest of Lexington. Pleasant Hill was an active Shaker community from 1805 to 1910. The site is now a National Historic Landmark and a popular tourist destination. Also called the Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill or Shakertown, it's the largest restored Shaker community in the United States. The Shakers were early inventors of many tools and techniques. For example, in the early 1830s the Shakers of Pleasant Hill constructed a water tower high on a hill above town. A horse-drawn pump lifted water into the tower, and from there a system of pipes carried the water down to the kitchens, cellars, and wash houses. It's believed to have been the first such system in the state of Kentucky. In the wash houses, the members built washing machines (also powered by horses) for the laundering of the communitys clothes and linens. The Shakers were also known for their fine furniture, which was beautiful in its' simplicity and built to last for generations. Visitors to Pleasant Hill can view exhibits, observe artisans and farmers at work using 19th century methods, and listen to Shaker music. Riverboat cruises are available on the Kentucky River, and nature trails provide hiking opportunities. It's also possible to spend the night in one of the many restored Shaker homes on site.

Southwestern Kentucky has a four-season climate with warm, humid summers and cold, wet winters. The climate classification is humid subtropical. The greatest rainfall occurs in the winter and early spring, especially March. September and October are the driest months due to the higher frequency of slow-moving, high-pressure systems. Thunderstorms are common in spring and summer. Average annual precipitation is 49 inches and snowfall ranges from 4 to 10 inches. Snow cover rarely lasts for more than a few days, although it is occasionally hit by major snowstorms. This area is also prone to freezing rain and ice storms. Other severe storms, such as tornadoes are possible, but infrequent in southwestern Kentucky. When they do occur, however, it's usually west of the Cumberland Plateau.
