Ashland
sits on the banks of the Ohio River at the point where Kentucky meets the states of West Virginia and Ohio. As of the 2010 census, the population was 21,684. However, the city is part of the Huntington(WV)-Ashland Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is the fifth largest metro area in Kentucky. The total area population is about 363,000. Ashland's downtown includes several historically preserved buildings, such as the Art Deco-style Paramount Arts Center and the Ashland Bank Building. Ashland also provides lots of outdoor recreational opportunities. Central Park is a wooded 47-acre park that features playgrounds, ball fields, a traditional bandstand and hosts an annual holiday Winter of Wonderland Lights. Also, being on the shores of the Ohio River provides lots of water-related sports, such as swimming, fishing, boating, water-skiing, riverboat cruises and more. Also in the area are numerous trails for hiking, campgrounds and several 18-hole golf courses. Other things to see in Ashland include the beautiful floodwall murals along the riverfront area and historic downtown, which offers walking tours. Ashland provides plenty of hotels, motels, and everything from fast food to family-style restaurants and fine dining.

Southwestern West Virginia , along the Ohio River, has a distinct, four-season climate. Due to the location in one of the westernmost and lowest altitude areas of the state, it has a warmer and milder humid subtropical climate, unlike the hilly uplands of West Virginia in the Allegheny and Appalachian Mountains. This southwestern region is warmed by westerly winds from the Midwest and made humid by the Ohio River, and avoids the bitter cold and high winds of the interior regions of the state. Summers are hot in southwestern West Virginia and winters cold and snowy. Snowfall can occur anytime from late November to mid-April, with the most amounts falling during January and February. Spring tends to be cool and wet, and autumn is mild and dry and pleasant temperatures for viewing colorful fall foliage.
